We have two things for you today...

First, our own Tim Salmons has kicked off a new weekly feature of his Dailies column called Pick-Ups, in which he looks back at older and more unique titles on disc that you might have missed, but that are still well worth your time and attention. This week, Tim reviews the Region B/UK Blu-ray releases of Day of the Dead, Big Trouble in Little China, and The People Under the Stairs from Arrow Video. Do check the column and reviews out and we hope you enjoy them.  [Read on here…]

This is just a quick update to let you all know about something interesting that many of you guys are going to want to check out. You remember that HD remastering of The X-Files we told you was happening over two years ago now? There’s still no word of a proper Blu-ray release of the series yet, though we certainly know many of you want one. BUT… Netflix has just begun to stream the series in HD. So at the very least, many of you can finally see it and get a better sense of the HD quality and what the early episodes look like in widescreen. Do give it a look.

After you do, ask yourself this question: Are you guys still interested in The X-Files on Blu-ray? What do you think of the HD quality of the series? Sound off on our Facebook page (click this link). We’d love to know what you think… and we know the studios monitor your comments there too. So make yourself heard!

Back Monday with the usual. Have a great weekend and stay tuned!

We’ve just posted an in-depth review of Scream Factory’s new Mad Max: Collector’s Edition, set to be released on Blu-ray on 5/5. Our own Tim Salmons’ has given the new edition a good going over for you all. The A/V quality is marginally different than the previous MGM Blu-ray (not really better or worse overall – just different), but the new extras are pretty terrific. It’s well worth a look, especially if you haven’t purchased the film on Blu-ray before. Those of you with the existing MGM BD release might have a tougher decision to make, but at $14 it’s not like buying the new edition and keeping both is going to break the bank. Anyway, enjoy the review!

Stay tuned...

Well... the last 24 hours have been a little crazy for movie fans, haven’t they? I attended Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim yesterday for the big panel of the morning, at which the new Episode VII teaser trailer was revealed by producer Kathleen Kennedy and director J.J. Abrams. Some background on my personal experience: The night before, great friends both old and new gathered for a pre-convention dinner. My wife Sarah and I were there, along with veteran Blu-ray producers Charles de Lauzirika and Cliff Stephenson, and Alec Peters and Diana Kingsbury of Propworx and Star Trek: Axanar fame. (Unable to attend because of work, BD producer Robert Meyer Burnett was there in spirit.) We learned that fans had actually started lining up to attend the panel earlier that morning so, somehow or other, it was decided that we should probably get in line ourselves around 5 AM in order to make sure we made it into the room. And, somehow or other, everybody was game for it. So get in line we did, along with thousands of others: Myself, Alec, Diana, Charlie and Cliff, joined by Chris Gore of Film Threat. We posed for a selfie to commemorate the insanity (at left – taken by Alec).  [Read on here…]
