My Two Cents

All right, we have another big day of Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K title announcements for you, so stand by for that.

First, Tim has posted new reviews of Scream Factory’s Quartermass II on Blu-ray, as well as Dennis’ thoughts on Mother Wore Tights on Blu-ray from Twilight Time. I’m also going to be working on a review of HBO’s From the Earth to the Moon on Blu-ray later today – I’ll try to have that up for tomorrow. And more are coming.

Now then... let’s dive right into the announcement news...

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just officially set director Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 8/27, with the Digital release expected on 8/6. Note that the 4K disc will include HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision high dynamic range. The 4K disc will also feature an object-based Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Extras will include audio commentary by the director, deleted scenes, and 17 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Godzilla: Nature’s Fearsome Guardian, Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, King Ghidorah: The Living Extinction Machine, Rodan: Airborne God of Fire, Godzilla 2.0, Making Morthra, Creating Ghidorah, Reimagining Rodan, The Yunnan Temple, Castle Bravo, The Antarctic Base, The Isla de Mara Volcano, The Undersea Lair, Millie Bobby Brown: Force of Nature, Monster Tech: Monarch Joins the Fight, Monsters Are Real, and Welcome to the Monsterverse). You can see the cover artwork above left and also below. [Read on here...]

There are unconfirmed reports that Warner is also working on The Polar Express and Gravity. Additional titles I’ve personally seen 4K Ultra HD tests of (in private meetings at CES) include The Godfather and Lawrence of Arabia, but whether they’ve been fully mastered and authored for released yet is unconfirmed.

We’re back! I have returned from North Dakota, rested, and am now going to be posting like gangbusters here at The Bits, with all kind of Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K release news, catch-up, and whatnot.

First up this morning, today is Amazon Prime Day! As you probably now if you’ve been following The Bits for any length of time, our Amazon affiliate links play a big part in helping us to keep the site going in lean Internet advertising times. So... if you’re planning to do any shopping from Amazon today (or any day), please consider clicking to them from one of our links first (like this one). It makes a huge difference for us. So thank you for doing so!

Now then, Tim and Dennis have been very busy posting Blu-ray reviews this past week here at The Bits and we want to direct your attention to them. We now have reviews up for Lionsgate’s The Evil Dead (1981) in 4K, Scream’s Night of the Creeps: Collector’s Edition, Silent Hill: Collector’s Edition, and Piranha: Limited Edition Steelbook, Arrow Video’s American Horror Project: Volume Two, The Andromeda Strain, and FM, Severin Films’ Robowar, and Grindhouse Releasing’s The Tough Ones (1976) from Tim, as well as Warner’s Shazam!, Arrow Academy’s The Big Clock (1948), and Twilight Time’s Stagecoach (1966) from Dennis. Do be sure to check them all out.

Also, San Diego Comic Con kicks off this week and if you’re going to be there, Bits editor and author Bill Hunt (yours truly) is on two panels at the Con... [Read on here...]

All right, we got some goodies for you today...

First, Tim has turned in a new review of Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead in 4K Ultra HD from Lionsgate and Studio Canal.

Also, this week’s update of the Release Dates & Artwork section is now live with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. Whenever you plan to shop from Amazon for literally anything, please consider starting by clicking through one of our affiliate links (like this one or any of our cover art links) as it really helps us to keep the site going and supports our work. Thank you!

And I should also let you know that I’m going to be taking a week off of regular news posts here at the site to A) visit family in North Dakota and B) finish editing this science fiction novel I’ve been working on. (In truth, I also need a break before all the Comic-Con 2019 hubbub begins.) But Tim will be posting new Blu-ray reviews the whole time, and I’ll be back with a big news update (and reviews of my own) late next week.

Now then... we’ve got some announcements this afternoon. First up, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland on 4K Ultra HD on 10/1 in celebration of the film’s 10th anniversary and also the theatrical release of its forthcoming sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap. All of the existing BD extras will carry over and you’ll get the all-new Raised from the Dead: Zombieland a Decade Later featurette. The 4K will include HDR10 and a new Dolby Atmos audio mix too. We’re starting today with a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column from our own Michael Coate, featuring a look back at the James Bond film Moonraker, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary (on June 26th). Michael’s put together a great roundtable discussion on the film featuring Mark A. Altman, John Cork, and Lee Pfeiffer. Enjoy!

Also here at the site today, we’ve got some new disc reviews for you, including Tim’s look at Universal’s Us in 4K Ultra HD, Scream Factory’s Night of the Creeps: Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray, and Warner’s The New Scooby-Doo Movies: The (Almost) Complete Blu-ray Collection.

And speaking of Scream Factory... Bits editor Bill Hunt (yours truly) will once again be moderating the Shout!/Scream panel at San Diego Comic-Con later this month! Inside an Indie Studio: Shout! Factory will be held from 8-9 PM on Saturday, July 20th in Room 23ABC. [Read on here...]

“I remember thinking as Bond tumbled out of the airplane that this was going to be the greatest film ever. And then, moments later, Jaws flapped his arms falling toward a circus tent. I felt my own internal seismograph plummet. I was for the first time in my life, embarrassed for the filmmakers of a James Bond film.” — John Cork, co-author of James Bond Encyclopedia

The Digital Bits and History, Legacy & Showmanship are pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the 40th anniversary of the release of Moonraker, the 11th (official) cinematic James Bond adventure and the fourth of seven to feature Roger Moore as cinema’s most popular secret agent.

Our previous celebratory 007 articles include Quantum of Solace, From Russia with Love, Never Say Never Again, Live and Let Die, Octopussy, Casino Royale (1967), Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day, Dr. No, The Living Daylights, The Spy Who Loved Me, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, Casino Royale, For Your Eyes Only, Thunderball, GoldenEye, A View to a Kill, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Goldfinger, and 007… Fifty Years Strong.

The Bits continues the series with this retrospective featuring a Q&A with an esteemed group of film historians and James Bond authorities who discuss the virtues, shortcomings and legacy of 1979’s Moonraker. [Read on here...]

Boy, this is a big news day! We’ve got official word of titles we’ve been reporting on here at The Bits for many weeks now. So let’s get right to it...

First of all, Marvel Studios and Disney have just announced Avengers: Endgame for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 8/13, with the Digital release expected on 7/30. (And that is just as we predicted here on The Bits and have had listed in our 4K Ultra HD Release List here for quite a while.) Audio on the 4K will be Dolby Atmos, while the Blu-ray will feature 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Look for HDR10 on the 4K disc.

Extras will include audio commentary by directors Anthony and Joe Russo with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, 7 featurettes (Remembering Stan Lee, Setting the Tone: Casting Robert Downey Jr., A Man Out of Time: Creating Captain America, Black Widow: Whatever It Takes, The Russo Brothers: Journey to Endgame, The Women of the MCU, and Bro Thor), 6 Deleted Scenes (including Goji Berries, Bombs on Board, Suckiest Army in the Galaxy, You Used to Frickin’ Live Here, Tony and Howard, and Avengers Take a Knee), a Gag Reel, and an intro by directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The Digital version will also include an exclusive featurette... Steve and Peggy: One Last Dance. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got a big update for you today, with lots of news, a few rumors, and some announcements too. But first...

I’ve just posted my in-depth review of Shout! Factory’s long-awaited Space: 1999 – The Complete Series Blu-ray set, which marks the first time Year Two of the series has been available on the format here in the States. It includes all 48 remastered episodes (sourced from the recent Network remaster) with a bunch of legacy extras and some good new content too. You’ll find that here.

Also here at The Bits today, we’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List with some new titles that we have reason to believe are coming (more on that in a minute), along with pre-orders for a couple of titles we’ve already confirmed are coming (Men in Black International and more). We also have a street date for Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 from our retail sources (tentatively look for it on 9/24). [Read on here...]

Today’s update is a quickie for a couple reasons...

1) I’m picking up my mother at the airport, here for a two-week visit from North Dakota. Also 2), Criterion just sent Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace for review on Blu-ray.

Honestly, I’m not sure which of those is more of the priority today for me. (I’m kidding. Of course it’s War and Peace. LOL. What mom doesn’t love classic Russian cinema?)

That said, we have some more new Blu-ray reviews for you today... Dennis has posted his thoughts on Greta from Universal and Tim Burton’s Dumbo from Disney.

And I’ve just survived watching Universal’s entire Fast and Furious: 8-Film Collection in 4K Ultra HD over the past two days, and I’ve got a review of that for you too. There are more to come soon, so stay tuned. [Read on here...]

We start this week with a great new Blu-ray review, this one of Scream Factory’s Universal Horror Collection, Volume 1 box set, which includes The Black Cat (1934), The Raven (1935), The Invisible Ray (1936), and Black Friday (1940). Do give it a look.

Also, just a heads-up: We’re going to be reviewing Warner Archive’s new Jonny Quest: The Complete Series Blu-ray soon. A review copy is on the way.

And we’ve posted the weekly update of the Release Dates & Artwork section featuring all of the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K cover artwork with Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, whenever you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking to them through one of our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really do appreciate it.
