All right… we hope you guys all had a good weekend, inclement weather and other current events aside.

As you might expect, we have a few new disc reviews for you to enjoy today…

First, Stephen has taken a look at Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce (1985) in 4K Ultra HD from Imprint Films.

Tim has offered his thoughts on Mark A.Z. Dippé’s Spawn (1997) in 4K from Arrow Video.

And Stuart has shared his take on Vincente Minnelli’s The Cobweb (1955) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

Walt Disney Home Entertainment has officially set the CG-animated Zootopia 2 (2025) for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 3/3, with the Digital release expected tomorrow on 1/27. [Read on here...]

Good afternoon, Bits readers!

We’ve got some good release news for you today, so let’s get right into it…

The big news today is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just set the Netflix original series Cobra Kai: The Complete Series on Blu-ray on 3/3!

Note that Season 6 will also be available separately on DVD that same day.

The 13-disc set will include all six seasons—65 episodes—in HD, with the same extras currently available on DVD.

However, the Blu-rays will include a pair of new audio commentaries with series creators Josh Herald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg on the pilot episode and the finale.

Now then, the big announcement news today is that Walt Disney Home Entertainment, 20th Century Studios, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced the long-awaited 4K Ultra HD release of Jim Sharman’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) on October 7th! The film is of course based on the musical by Richard O’Brian, and the release is happening in honor of the film’s 50th anniversary. [Read on here...]

Tim has posted his thoughts on Jeff Burr’s From a Whisper to a Scream (1987) on region-free Blu-ray from the good folks at Turbine Media in Germany.

Dennis has offered his take on Rouben Mamoulian’s Queen Christina (1933) on Blu-ray from our friends at the Warner Archive Collection.

And Stuart has given John Brahm’s Rio (1939) a spin on Blu-ray from Universal via Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

There isn’t a great deal of official news to report today, but we do have breaking news from Disney, which has leaked via Amazon and the Disney Movie Club: The studio will release Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) on 4K Ultra HD on 8/22! [Read on here...]

We have some major release news to report today, but first we’ve got more new disc reviews...

Stephen has delivered his thoughts on Walter Hill’s Streets of Fire (1984) in 4K Ultra HD from Shout! Factory. As fans will no doubt already know, this one is a real cult cinema gem, and it sounds like the 4K release is pretty fantastic, including terrific video and audio quality, as well as a great new feature-length documentary on the making of the film by Daniel Griffith’s Ballyhoo Motion Pictures. Don’t miss it.

Also today, Tim has reviewed another film from Arrow’s Shawscope: Volume One Blu-ray boxed set, specifically Chang Cheh’s Shaolin Temple (1976) (aka Death Chamber).

Stuart has taken a look at Anthony Mann’s El Cid (1961) which is now available in a new Japanese-import Blu-ray release from Happinet.

And finally, Dennis has offered his take on Julien Duvivier’s Flesh and Fantasy (1943) on Blu-ray from Universal Pictures via Vinegar Syndrome.

Now then, the big release news today is big indeed: Disney and 20th Century Studios have just officially announced the 4K Digital release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water on 3/28. This will include Dolby Atmos audio and over three hours worth of bonus features (more on that in a minute). Studio sources have also reached out to us to confirm that the physical Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release is forthcoming and will be announced at a later date. It simply appears that the studio intends to squeeze every possible dime out of this film at every level of distribution. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got a little bit of ground to cover today news-wise, so let’s get right to it...

First up, Universal has officially announced F9: The Fast Saga for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 9/21, with the Digital release expected on 9/7. Both the Blu-ray and 4K will include Dolby Atmos audio. The 4K disc will also include HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision high dynamic range. These discs will feature both the theatrical cut and a Director’s Cut that runs about 7 minutes longer. Extras will include audio commentary on both versions with director Justin Lin, a gag reel, and 6 featurettes (F9: All In, Practically Fast, Shifting Priorities, Justice for Han, A Day on Set with Justin Lin, and John Cena: Supercar Superfan). Disney has officially announced the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of The Jungle Cruise on 11/16, just four days after it goes into wide availability on Disney+. The Digital release is expected on 8/31. Look for the 4K disc to include HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include a Jungle Cruise Expedition Mode viewing option (that includes pop-up trivia), 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (It’s a Jungle Out There: Making Jungle Cruise, Dwayne and Emily: Undoubtedly Funny, Creating the Amazon, and Once a Skip, Always a Skip), outtakes, and 11 deleted scenes. The cover artwork isn’t available yet.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set Space Jam: A New Legacy for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/5, with the Digital release expected on 9/3. Look for HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio on the 4K. Extras will include 4 featurettes (First Quarter: Game On, Second Quarter: Teamwork, Third Quarter: Out of This World, and Fourth Quarter: The Looniest), plus deleted scenes. We’ve got an early My Two Cents post for you this morning here at The Bits with a bit of breaking 4K news...

Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution has just officially announced that director M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable (2000) will be released on physical 4K Ultra HD and 4K Digital on September 21st.

The film stars Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Robin Wright Penn, Spencer Treat Clark, and Charlayne Woodard.

Unbreakable joins Shyamalan’s Split (2016) and Glass (2019)—both of which have been released previously on Ultra HD by Universal—thus completing the director’s Eastrail 177 Trilogy on the format. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got a brief update for you this morning here at The Bits, but it’s an important one.

In the wake of Disney’s announcement Wednesday of their plans to release Jan de Bont’s Speed (1994) in 4K Ultra HD on 5/4, which is a 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) catalog title, there have been a number of questions raised.

The official press release seemed to indicate that the Digital version of the film in 4K would include object-based Dolby Atmos audio, but the actual physical 4K Ultra HD disc would not.

There have also been rumors that the title would not include HDR, or that the studio would only include HDR on the Digital release.

As you can imagine, I decided to cut through the confusion to ask the studio about this directly. I’ve now heard back, so here are the official confirmed details on this release… [Read on here...]

We have some good breaking release news to cover today here at The Bits. First though, we’ve got more new disc reviews for you...

Tim has given Clint Eastwood’s Play Misty for Me (1971) a look, as recently released on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And I’ve just posted my thoughts on Andrew Niccol’s neo-noir, science fiction classic GATTACA (1997), which is coming next week on 4K Ultra HD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film looks and sounds every bit as good as you’d hope, so don’t miss it.

Now then, the big news today is that Disney has officially confirmed the much-anticipated 4K Ultra HD release of director Jan de Bont’s Speed (1994) on 5/4. Mastered from a recent 4K scan, the disc will include a new Dolby Atmos sound mix along with high dynamic range in HDR10 format. [Editor’s Note: Disney’s press materials now suggest that only the Digital 4K will have Atmos. We’ve asked the studio for official confirmation and will post an update here when we hear back.]

Perhaps most interestingly, it appears that at least some of the extras from Fox’s 2002 Five Star Collection DVD are being carried over—many of these were omitted from the previous Fox Blu-ray release. [Read on here...]

All right, many of you have asked about (or otherwise understandably bemoaned) the lack of big or significant announcements relating to catalog films on 4K Ultra HD lately. So today’s update here at The Digital Bits is about addressing that concern.

And while we still have little in the way of official announcements at the moment, I can confidently report that at least some of titles you’re waiting for are on the way in 2020.

The information in today’s post should be considered unofficial until the studios in question make their actual announcements. But we believe it to be a reliable gauge of titles currently in the production pipeline or planning stages.

First, we know for sure that Disney is going to be releasing Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga on 4K coinciding with the Blu-ray and 4K release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, likely in March. [Read on here...]
