Burnt Offerings for August 26, 2014

by

If last week was a slow one for new MOD releases, this week is downright stagnant. There are just two new titles from Warner Archive and they’re this week’s Little Lebowski Urban Achievers. But fans of a certain Boston detective will be happy and, if nothing else, it won’t take you long to read this column.

An Honor To Be Nominated: Tootsie

by

(If it can be difficult to remember who won the Academy Award for Best Picture, it’s downright mindbending trying to remember everything else it was up against. In An Honor To Be Nominated, I’ll be taking a look back at some of the movies the Oscar didn’t go to and trying to determine if they were robbed, if the Academy got it right, or if they should ever have been nominated in the first place.) Here at The Bits today, our very own Tim Salmons has turned in a pair of new reviews, featuring Kino and Scorpion Releasing’s Grizzly (1976) on DVD and Criterion’s Thief on Blu-ray, directed by Michael Mann. Enjoy!

Doogan’s Queue for August 19, 2014

by

I just want to take a moment and say thank you to Robin Williams, Jay Adams, Lauren Bacall, and the great Joe Viskocil for all the things they did in this life. I know that great people (known and unknown) die every day; and all of them deserve to be honored. But for the way these four touched my life and just wanted to personally thank them and hope this message gets to each and every one of them.

Okay, so with the boo-hoo out of the way, let’s look at what’s coming out this week that we can watch in our homes. You know, because: priorities.  [Read on here…]

Burnt Offerings for August 19, 2014

This isn’t a huge week for MOD releases but it’s a good one for fans of 1970s cult cinema. And we’re all fans of 1970s cult cinema around these parts, right? I thought so. Let’s take a look and thank you in advance for assisting The Bits by doing your DVD shopping via the array of buttons you see right… about… here.  [Actually just a little farther. Click here...]

Okay… unfortunately your dedicated editor is a little bit under the weather today, so I’m going to keep this quick in order to try and rest my way out of this blasted cold.

Nevertheless, we do have some good announcement news for you today, so let’s get right to it.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got three things for you today to close out the week…

First, our own Michael Coate has turned in a fine new History, Legacy & Showmanship column, celebrating today’s 35th anniversary of the theatrical debut of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Included in the piece is a rundown of the initial 70 mm theatrical engagements, trivia, and a pair of interview with film historians Jon Lewis and Lee Pfeiffer. Enjoy!

Also today, Tim Salmons has turned in a review of Raro Video’s The Year of the Cannibals (1970) on Blu-ray, an Italian film from director Liliana Cavani.  [Read on here…]
