Doogan's Views

In the near future Los Angeles, an experimental (but super sexy) AI (Rebecca Ferguson) is tasked with being Judge, Jury and Executioner. Once you’re arrested for a crime, the AI, Judge Maddox, walks you through the crime and gives you access to everything you need—from documents to video footage and access to witnesses—to support your case. If you fail to get your innocence meter down to 92% within an hour and a half (the runtime of the film, hey hey), you are put to death right then and there. The second biggest (cough) supporter of Judge Maddox is Detective Chris Raven (Chris Pratt), and he just happens to be the latest (but super sexy) case—accused of killing his wife. With everything stacked against him, he is marked with a probability of 97.5%. Yeah, Chris is having a bad day and if you’re not a fan of Minority Report, you will be too. Kidding. Mercy isn’t terrible, it’s actually quite watchable especially with enjoyable performances by Ferguson and Pratt basically playing themselves playing out black box theater scenes from The Fugitive (“I didn’t kill my wife!” “I don’t care.” “And scene.”). In the end, it feels like another super obvious streaming film and that’s because it is a super obvious streaming film (watch it on Prime) and this Blu-ray is nothing but a hard copy. So, if you turned off your Prime account to watch something on Disney+ you can now watch this without reactivating your account. Hoorah!

With that in mind, this release is absolutely just that—a physical copy of an Amazon film. There are no extras, video is very pleasant and, depending on your Wi-Fi quality (mine is great) this Blu-ray copy looks pretty much exact to the streaming version. Sound is Dolby Atmos and yep, sounds great. There are also tracks in English Descriptive, French, French Canadian, German and Spanish in Dolby Digital 5.1. I think just about every language is covered off in the subs. If you just need to own Mercy, this is here for you. But if you can wait a few years, maybe Criterion will come sniffing around? Probability of that is probably just about 7% however.
